Puckersley pint is one of the best

A PUB straddling the Crompton and Royton border has been included in the 2018 Good Beer Guide.

And landlady Jessica Brady believes it’s the first time the Puckersley Inn has earned the accolade from the ale drinkers’ ‘bible.’

No other hostelry from Shaw and Crompton is included in the 45th edition of the Good Beer Guide produced by the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA).

More than 4,500 of the UK’s best pubs feature in the 1,032 page tome with details about beer, food, pub gardens, accommodation and opening hours.

So, Jessica, whose family are steeped in the pub trade, is naturally delighted with the honour.

“We have only had the pub for about 18 months,” said Jessica who runs the Puckersley with partner Bradley Hough.

“We weren’t included last year and speaking to the CAMRA group who have been in, they suggested it’s the first time the pub has been included.

“We are really pleased but there is always room for improvement.”

The Puckersley is a JW Lees house and among its ales are: JW Lees cask bitter, Manchester Pale Ale and seasonal beers changed every couple of months.

Jessica, who previously lived at the Lancashire Fold in Middleton, and Bradley have also been proactive by improving and adding to the food menu.

“One of our main focusses is the food side,” Jessica confirmed.

“We like to think there has been a difference from when we first came in. But we are always working with the chef to improve the food and the menu.”

The citation in the Good Beer Guide reads: “Popular, detached, stone-fronted pub situated on the edge of the green belt with panoramic views over Royton, Shaw and Oldham.

“The welcoming Lees local has a traditional vault and comfortable lounge.

“The dining extension serves an excellent range of well-prepared meals, lunchtimes and evenings until 9pm (8pm on Saturday) with children welcome in the area.

“Cosy corners provide plenty of space to chat and chill out over a pint or two. A garden area is available for warmer weather.”

Three Oldham pubs also feature: Ashton Arms (Clegg Street), Carrion Crow (Huddersfield Road) and Up Steps Inn (High Street).
