Waggon on a roll – three awards for ‘turnaround’ pub

THREE is definitely the magic number for a “little back street pub in Milnrow.”

WINNERS: Kate Caffrey and husband Dario

That’s the number of awards Dario Padron and his wife Kate have scooped in recent months for their running of Marston’s house, the Waggon Inn at Butterworth Hall.

Not satisfied with winning ‘North Regional Turnaround’ pub of the year, the duo went on to claim the national prize at Doncaster Racecourse.

Then the hat-trick was completed at a special lunch in Derbyshire earlier this month when they were voted number one in 4,000 to win Marston’s Pub of the Year.

“We couldn’t believe it,” Dario told the Correspondent.

“We thought we would never win it against so much quality.

“Us – a little back street pub in Milnrow!”

Dario may be modest about the Waggon’s triple crown but there’s more judgement than luck in his victories.

He has been in the restaurant trade from the age of 12 when he washed pots in restaurants in his native Tenerife.

Arriving in England in 1999, Dario worked as a waiter and chef before taking over the Grove Inn, Blackley.

“Ten years down the line my Area Manager said ‘I have a little pub you might be interested in with the potential to be a restaurant’,” Dario explained.

“I told him I was happy where I was and making enough money.

“But I came to have a look at the Waggon in September 2015 and thought it has potential. The rest is history.”

Having achieved his three Marston’s honours Dario, a keen darts player who has represented Rochdale Super League, has no intention of resting on his laurels.

The pub is currently having further investment from the Wolverhampton-based brewery to enhance its reputation.

“We have been here for two years and four months and never had a down. We want it to stay that way,” said Dario.

“But we couldn’t have done it without the people from Milnrow. It’s not just us making the pub, it is the customers. They have been very loyal.

“But also when they don’t like something they tell us – and that’s what we like.”
