Tram passenger numbers up despite on-going anti-social behaviour issues

DESPITE being dubbed Metrolink’s worst for anti-social behaviour, transport bosses say the Oldham to Rochdale tram line, including Shaw and Newhey stops, is prospering.

Anti-Social behaviour has blighted some metrolink services

Figures obtained by the Shaw and Crompton Correspondent revealed more people are using Metrolink than ever before.
But the expanding system continues to be plagued with incidents of violence.
Earlier this month a passenger was robbed at knifepoint as he left the Hollinwood tram stop.
His attackers are thought to have brandished a seven to eight-inch blade before making off with an Armani watch and iPhone plus two bank cards.
Metrolink and Greater Manchester Police are working together on a TravelSafe scheme to patrol tram stops and cut down on crime.
A spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester said: “The safety and security of our customers and staff is our top priority.”
Despite on-going issues TfGM say in the calendar year 2017 Metrolink passengers made a total of 40.8 million trips. This compared to 37.01 million in 2016.
The increase also included an 8.52 per cent rise from 5.49m in 2016 to 5.96m in 2017 for the Oldham and Rochdale line.
These figures compare with:
Bury: 8.15m (2016), 8.39m (2017), +3.00;
Altrincham: 8.77m (2016), 9.30m (2017), +6.11;
Eccles and Media City UK: 3.79m (2016), 4.57m (2017), +20.42;
East Didsbury: 4.26m (2016), 5.02 (2017), +17.90;
Airport: 2.60m (2016), 3.06m (2017), +17.69;
Ashton: 2.95m (2016), 3.22m (2017), +9.00;
Within City Zone: 1.00m (2016), 1.31m (2017), +30.52.
On the 40.8 million trips TfGM admits: “The majority of this of course represents a smaller number of actual passengers making a large number of trips.
“We have no way of measuring precisely how many unique passengers use Metrolink.
“But we would estimate that approximately 50,000 people around Greater Manchester use Metrolink for their daily commute.”
