Footpath find by Nordic Walking duo

TWO members of Dunwood Park Nordic Walkers have discovered a footpath they did not know existed.

Jean and John Norman were out exploring and found the footpath which starts on Crompton Moor at grid reference N95005 W10517 on the Ordnance Survey SD map.

Start walking from St Saviour’s Church on Buckstones Road and continue to the shooting range on Crompton Moor.

Once on the wide track for vehicles, walk towards Slences driveway and from standing in the centre of Slences Farm driveway, walk parallel with the farm wall uphill on Crompton Moor for 345 steps and turn immediately left as shown in the first photo.

This is an ancient crossing point and provides stone extensions to act as steps to assist walkers over the old farm wall blackened with industrial activity.

This is a walk which would take approximately three hours from a home on the east side of Shaw and Crompton for the whole walk.

This is an enjoyable ramble for individuals or people from the same residence and at the moment walking conditions are dry and firm. It involves some stiles and a little wall climbing.

The destination is the A640 Huddersfield Road which runs between Newhey and Denshaw.

The walk has been recorded by photos and the next footpath sign is at Slences Farm.

This pleasant walk is more or less in a straight line as it does not go to the left or right but offers a magnificent view of Dunwood Woods to the left.

Catch sight of the ‘Rochdale Council’ footpath sign and continue to enjoy a fabulous view of Newhey below you.

Finally, you reach the main road via a stone stile and another footpath marker saying Rochdale Way’ on a tall tree across the road.

Enjoy a view of the dam wall at Ogden Reservoir before retracing your steps back across the open moorland to return home.

If any other walkers are met on the walk keep two metres distance away, don’t sit down anywhere and wash your hands when you return back home.

All walkers are welcome to join Dunwood Park Nordic Walkers when the health restrictions are lifted. Keep in touch via facebook.com/dunwoodparknordicwalkers
